Here are five things you should know about the New ACT Writing Test. 1. Writing Prompt Design The enhanced test frames the essay assignment in a more structured way. The previous test presented students with an issue and gave positions for or against the issue, asking the student to take one of those positions or to formulate a different position. Blank space was given for planning, and 30 minutes was allotted for completion of the essay. The current test presents an issue and offers three diverse perspectives on it that encourage critical engagement with the issue. With this additional information, students are required to partake in a discussion and analysis of each of the three perspectives as well as present their own viewpoint. Because the task is more involved, there is more guidance for planning and prewriting, and 40 minutes are allotted for completion of the essay. 2. Contemporary Issues Are Presented Generally, the topics used on the enhanced writing prompts are more thought-provoking and mature than the old topics. For example, in the past, a topic might be ââ¬Å"Should school uniforms be mandatory in schools?â⬠or ââ¬Å"Should a student be required to maintain a ââ¬ËCââ¬â¢ average to get a driverââ¬â¢s license?â⬠ââ¬âtopics of particular interest or concern to high school students. The topics presented on the enhanced test are less trivial and are more applicable to the general public. For example, the essay topic provided on the ACT website, ââ¬Å"Intelligent Machines,â⬠examines the implications of the accelerating variety and prevalence of the presence of technology in our lives: ââ¬Å"Automation is generally seen as a sign of progress, but what is lost when we replace humans with machines?â⬠Additional potential topics could be issues around global conflicts, public health, or individual liberty. 3. A New 36-Point Scale ââ¬â Changed Back To The 12-Point Scale Prior to September 2015, the ACT writing test was scored on a scale of 1-6 by two scorers for a combined 2ââ¬â12 score. With the new essay section format also came a new scoring method, where students received four domain scores (Ideas and Analysis, Development and Support, Organization, and Language Use and Conventions), which each have a possible 2ââ¬â12 score. Students could score as high as 48 points, which was then converted to a score of 1ââ¬â36. However, in June 2016, the ACT announced that beginning with the September 2016 national test date, scoring will move back to a 2-12 scale, using the average of the four 2-12 domain scores in the categories mentioned above. To help understand the change, ACT has released a white paper on how to compare scores from the 2015-16 tests to the 2016-17 tests. 4. We Still Encourage Students to Complete the ACT Writing Test While the ACT Writing section is an optional portion of the test, we generally encourage students to take it. Even if a studentââ¬â¢s top-choice school does not require the essay, chances are that other schools she is applying to will require it. It may not be a major part of a studentââ¬â¢s preparation, but she should still be prepared to write the essay. We donââ¬â¢t want students to find themselves in the position of having to retake the whole ACT because they discover later that the schools they are applying to require an essay scoreââ¬âso we recommend students complete the section in most cases. 5. Change Is Good The new essay gives students additional time to work on the essay and provides more background information and guidance about the essay topic so that students are not starting from scratch. As with the rest of the ACT, preparation is key. The more opportunities students have to practice the new essay format, the more likely they are to succeed. We hope you now have a better understanding of the new ACT Writing section: what it looks like, how it is scored, and why most students should complete the optional essay. It is widely believed that pets can have a positive impact on the health and physical activity levels of their owners. These three articles take a deeper look at the health effects pets have on their owners in terms of physical activity, blood pressure levels, stress levels, and risk of allergy sensitization. This study conducted by Allen, Shykoff, and Izzo evaluates the effect of social support intervention (pet ownership) in relation to stress before and while undergoing ACE inhibitor therapy. This study hypothesized that having a pet would help to lower blood pressure, heart rate, and renin responses to psychological stress. The study had 48 participants, equally distributed between male and female, with stage II hypertension and in a high-stress profession (stockbrokers). Participants were randomized to either a control group (without pets) or an experimental group (who acquired pets subsequently). After 1 month of observation, all participants completed, at-home, baseline m ental stress sessions. These sessions consisted of participants doing psychologically stressful tasks while their systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), heart rate (HR), and plasma renin activity (PRA) were measured and recorded. After the first baseline session was completed, all participants from both groups began lisinopril therapy (20 mg/d). At the same time, participants in the experimental group were also instructed to get a pet cat or dog. This investment will generated the largest value of net wealth in 1 yea r time. Question 5 Assumption: An investment on a portion or whole of $4 million has to be made. Spenders have a higher preference for current consumption. They would want more money in present value terms to be able to spend. Savers have a higher preference to save for the future. They would want more money in future value terms. Based on the above, the investment of $3 million in the restaurant has the highest payoff in present value terms and future value terms. There is a higher probability of spenders and savers agreeing to an investment of $3 million. If there is a investment made for $3million out of four in Ginis restraunt, one million will be left for distribution as dividents to the shareholders. The net presnet value of the three million invested is nearly $1. 4 million. Therefore in terms of savers this will be a good deal because they would be able to save nealy as much as consumers will consume in todays dollars. This will be a perfect tradeoff between the two parties. An investment of $3 million in the restaurant leaves $1 million for distribution as dividends to shareholders. This works for spenders as they get a part of $1 million to spend/consume today. The Net Present Value (NPV) of the investment of $3 million in the restaurant is $1. 4 million. This is the best possible investment option out of the four options provided. This works for Savers as they have more money saved. Inspired by idealism and grounded in sacrifice, the suffrage campaign is of enormous political and social significance yet it is virtually unacknowledged in the chronicles of American history. Had the suffrage movement not been so ignored by historians, women like Lucretia Mott, Carrie Chapman Catt and Alice Paul would be as familiar to most Americans as Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt or Martin Luther King, Jr. We would know the story of how women were denied the right to vote despite the lofty words of the Constitution, how they were forced to fight for their rights against entrenched opposition with virtually no financial, legal or political power. If the history of the suffrage movement was better known, we would understand that democracy for the first 150 years in American included half of the population. And we would realize that this situation changed only after the enormous efforts of American citizens in what remains one of the most remarkable and successful nonviolent efforts to change ingrained social attitudes and institutions in the modern era. For women won the vote. They were not given it, granted it, or anything else. They won it as truly as any political campaign is ultimately won or lost. In addition, they won it, repeatedly, by the slimmest of margins, which only underscores the difficulty and magnitude of their victories. In the successful California referendum of 1911, the margin was one vote per precinct! In the House, suffrage passed the first time by exactly the number needed with supporters coming in from the hospital and funeral home to cast their ballots. In the Senate, it passed by two votes. ... The conflict between the nature and characteristic of human beings and civilization restrictions can be found in the early psychological writings of Freud. Freudââ¬â¢s early writing about stages of psychosexual development comprised of destructive of aggressive forces, which are libido-bound in the sadism form (anal, oral, and urethral). Freud, however, measured aggression as portion of self-preservative characters when it resulted from response to frustrating thing or after the occurrence of a conflict between hunger (ego instincts) and love (object instincts). In Civilization and Its Contents, he describes (I) the conflicts that occur between individualsââ¬â¢ social rules and sexual argues that helps them to endure, and (ii) Thanatos, which is a key self-destructive instinct of death, which has overwhelming social consequences when directed outwards. Genocide, violence, and killings are all enough proof of the theory of Freud that, human beings are not ââ¬Å"goodâ⬠. Freud argues that it is not easy to give an answer to the very question, ââ¬Å"what is the function of the life of human beingâ⬠that most people understand that human beings only survive happily. Freud catalogues the way human beings avoid pain and seek pleasure, such as intoxicating, sublimating libido into the job, and displacing libido onto the beauty enjoyment (Parisi 67). According to Freud, civilization aids in helping human beings against nature, regulating human beingsââ¬â¢ relationships, and encouraging their higher mental actions (scientific, intellectual, as well as artistic success). Self-preservative characteristics and Eros contribute towards civilization, as human beings can strive better through working hand in hand. The way they are structured helps to facilitate goal achievement. This report compares the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) with Westpac Banking Corporation (Westpac). Reserve Bank of Australia RBA is Australiaââ¬â¢s central bank. The objectives of the Bank are set out in its policies ââ¬â ensuring that the monetary and banking policies are advantageous to the people of Australia (Reserve Bank of Australia 3). In so doing the policies of the bank are designed to ensure stability of Australiaââ¬â¢s currency, facilitate full employment; and contribute to economic prosperity and welfare of the Australian people. RBA has a Governor and Deputy Governor as well as a number of boards, committees, groups and departments. They all have their relevant functions which facilitate the proper management of the Bank. The structure of the organization is shown in the organization cha rt in Appendix 1. The Boards include the Reserve Bank Board and the Payments System Board. The Reserve Bank Board has responsibility for monetary and banking related polices while the Payments Systems Board is responsible for polices relating to the payments system. The Governor is the Chairman for both Boards with the Deputy Governor as Deputy Chairman for the Reserve Bank Board. The committees of RBA include the Executive Committee; the Audit Committee; the Remuneration Committee; and the Risk Management Committee. The forum for discussions among heads of functional departments and the Governor and Deputy Governor is provided by the executive committee. The audit committee is chaired by a non-executive board and this should help facilitate the level of independence that is required of members of this committee. The Remuneration Committee is also a committee of the Reserve Bank Board and is drawn from the non-executive members of that Board. The Risk Management Committee is chaired by the Deputy Governor and its responsibility is that of identifying and managing those risks that are not policy related, across the bank. The Groups consists of the Banking and Payments Group; the Corporate Services; the Currency; the Economic; the Financial Markets; and the Financial System Groups. All of these groups have one or more departments that fall under their remit. They provide a range of services for institution. The Banking and Payments Group consists of two departments ââ¬â the Banking Department and the Payments Settlements Department. The Payments and Settlements Department on the other hand has the responsibility of settling high valued payments and inter-bank obligations which result ââ¬Ëfrom the conduct of Exchange Settlement Accounts andââ¬â ¢ the RBAââ¬â¢s own trading activities. Other responsibilities of the Bank and Settlement Department include the operations of the Reserve Bank Information and Transfer System (RITS) which is Australiaââ¬â¢s real time gross settlement (RTGS) system. I was seventeen and this campaign was different, this time I had a lot of responsibility, I was in control of a portion of a city and I was determined to show people that I could make a difference. It was the knowledge that I could make a difference that showed me that I wanted to work in politics either running as a politician or campaigning for one. I will continue to gain experience by volunteering on political campaigns and I will gain knowledge by completing my Bachelorââ¬â¢s degree in political science. This was the day that I decided that I can do more and effect more than I had ever believed possible. It was November sixth and right in the middle of fall. The leaves were changing color, falling off the trees, and the foliage was covering the ground. I remember my parents waking me up at 5am; it was hard for me to wake up because the night before I stayed late working at campaign headquarters and preparing for this day. It was the last day to make a difference; it was Election Day. When I finally got out of my bed it was still dark, I jumped into the shower then picked up a bagel for the road. It was dark and cold outside and my hands were shaking either from being nervous that I wouldnââ¬â¢t do a good job or just the cold weather. It was about a ten minute car ride to where my mother and I would be working for the day. When we arrived we immediately set up the signs, so everyone would know that this was the voting place. My mom went inside the school to meet some of the other people who would be working at the school. Her job was to check off all the people who voted that day. This list would later be given to me so I could relay the information to headquarters. But while she was inside I was still setting up the signs outside. This would be the beginning of a long and frustrating day. As I was putting up the signs I ran into another person who was also putting up signs for our candidate. A narrow hallway in the living room went to small winding Steps that took you to a great room on the second floor of the house, this is where my kids had their bedrooms. The house was surrounded with the most amazing yard. The white picket fence enclosed a grape arbor, as old as the house, and underneath the grapes there were two small rope swings attached to the arbor for my kids. Outside the fence was a large orchard filled with apples, pears and plums: and a lovely garden that I planted each summer with corn, tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, blueberries and raspberries. I remember the day as if it were yesterday. We were getting ready for the long weekend, and my brother was coming down from Portland to celebrate my sisters birthday. The day started as a typical late summer morning. The sun was shining high in the sky, the birds were busy in the grapes and was busy in the kitchen. My son was in the large claw foot tub playing pirate ships with soap bars and my daugh ter was on the computer in the living room playing her favorite game. It was a lovely morning. With the warm breeze blowing through the open doors and windows I could smell a faint bit of smoke, but that was not unusual. Our house was tucked in between many mint farmers. They would harvest the mint in the late summer, then burn the fields afterwards for pest and weed control. In the kitchen I heard a car come down the gravel driveway honking loudly. It was too soon for my brother to arrive, so I went outside to see what was happening. Before even stopping he pointed at the roof and yelled, ââ¬Å"Your house is on fire! â⬠ââ¬Å"Your house is on fire-get the hose! â⬠popped into high gear and grabbed the garden hose, turned the faucet on the outside spigot and handed it to the stranger and went inside to grab my children. Once I new they were outside safer went back inside the house to call the fire department. New wasn't in eminent danger because the flames looked very sma ll from the ground and they were high above on the roof at the other end Of the house. After calling, I went back outside and realized more people had arrived. Many more, some offering help and others just staring. Could hear some of them say ââ¬ËNathan a shame, this historic house is on fire. â⬠That was when I felt my first twinge offer and anger at the same time. The fire department came after what seemed like a lifetime. They were so very positive, ââ¬Å"Don't worry Miss, this can be stopped easily. Those reassuring words put me at ease.A stranger asked if would like to go down the street and use her phone to call anyone and let them know what was going on. She also offered up a t-shirt for my naked son. As I sat in this strange car, I felt as if time was going backwards. The clock tick-tock ever so slow. She took me back to my burning house to wait for my mom. As walked up towards the flames, my husband gave me the bad news that they couldn't stop the fire safely. One of the firemen had fallen, caught his leg in the narrow stairway and was injured so they made the determination of safety. My heart sunk back into my stomach. The fire chief started asking me where important things were in the house. As we spoke to him, he would describe the area to someone inside via handheld radios: ââ¬Å"Photo Album, left windowâ⬠, one yelled. ââ¬Å"Purse, wallet, right windowâ⬠another called out. And items were flying into the yard through the windows. The crew worked hard to save what they could for our family. They Were so brave to sacrifice through the smoke and heat. I stood there shaking and watching the fire grow bigger and bigger. Soon the beautiful summer day was surrounded by so much noise; people talking, owes going, emergency vehicles coming and going. And the stench had taken the beautiful smells of late summer morning and turned it into something that is etched in my brain for eternity. A smell of wet clothes, burning wire, smoldering woo d and melting plastic. A smell like no other. I watched the whole house burn to the ground. My biggest fear came to life right in front of me. Right in front of many people. The time didn't pass slow that afternoon, I finally sat down as the flames were starting to diminish, people were leaving and darkness was settling the fields around me. Not a tear came down my face that day. I was numb.I stood in the drive way and looked at the mess, wet wood, ashes, burnt mattress, my daughters rocking horse sideways charred in the back yard. At that moment, standing there, staring at the mess I realized we lost most of our belongings. Day to day things you don't think about, such as hairbrush, toothpaste, shoes, underwear, deodorant, dishes, bread, coffee, milk and snacks. I realized all my belongings, the material things were gone. I had lost everything in all the sparks that flew into once blue sky. But somehow, even though the flames took everything, had not lost what was truly important. Holmes defines a worldview that ââ¬Å"is not disengaged theology; rather it represents the beliefs and values and purposes that guide our work, play, family, and society.â⬠While many worldviews seek answers to lifeââ¬â¢s fundamental questions, Christians stand on the foundation of a biblical worldview. A biblical worldview is an overall concept of the world and humankindââ¬â¢s part in it, grounded on Godââ¬â¢s authority, which He reveals to each person through the Bible. Specifically, Paul addresses the issue of the Christian worldviewâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦All humanity was justifiably condemned, but God declares Christââ¬â¢s death to be the appropriate, designated sacrifice for sin. Christ then stands in humanityââ¬â¢s place, having paid the penalty of death for sin. Pardon, deliverance and freedom are brought by Jesus ââ¬â¢ sacrifice. Sexual relations are a powerful and essential part of Godââ¬â¢s intentions for defining humanity. God intended sexual relationships to be ideal for His creation. Therefore, Paul emphasizes the destruction sin distorts from the illegitimate use of the gifts from God. ââ¬Å"Even their women exchanged natural sexual relation for unnatural onesâ⬠¦men also abandoned natural relations with women with lust for one anotherâ⬠¦men committed shameful acts with other menâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Romans 1:26-27). They are of such importance that the Bible gives them special attention and counsels more restraint and self-control than with any other desire. Paul indicates one of clearest ways of society or a person in rebellion against God is the rejection of Godââ¬â¢s guidelines for the use of sex. In Paulââ¬â¢s day, many pagan practices encouraged homosexuality, ââ¬Å"men committed shameful acts with other men,â⬠(Romans 3:27). Homosexuality is strictly forbidden in Godââ¬â¢s Wor d (Leviticus 18:22). God does not obligate or encourage the degradation of this act in humanities relationships. In 44 BC he took the name Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus, after the murder of Julius Caesar. Octavianââ¬â¢s family begged him to stay where he was and renounce his inheritance because they thought the assassins of Caesar were very strong. Octavian did not take his families advice, and in a tremendously daring act he announced that he was going to Rome to claim what was his and avenge Caesarââ¬â¢s death. To make sure that people knew who he was, he called himself ââ¬Å"Caesar.â⬠This identified him fully with his adoptive father, and gave him legitimacy. Leadership has to do with change, enthusiasm and encouragement for the tasks, and influence. These three vital traits, each one linked with a specific function for leaders include: 1) The imagination to innovate: à To promote innovation, successful leaders assist in cultivating novel view, the ideas, paradigm, and applications of expertise that makes an organization distinct. Management Skills and Leadership Skills. Accessed February 27,2008. http://coaching.mulhauser.net/executive/manage-vs-lead.html#evidence Mulhauser argues that there is no delineation line between management and leadership and the skills pertinent to the issue. Anchored on the theoretical perspective of Carl Rogers especially on the latterââ¬â¢s concepts like Acceptance, Authenticity and Empathic Listening, the author explores the development of these characteristics well into the individual manager or leaderââ¬â¢s style which springs essentially from the personââ¬â¢s character. The author believes that many of the theories set forth on any of these two issues are defective simply because the fact remains that there is simply no distinction as to when leadership starts and ends and where management plays its role in the picture. The author puts forth practical situations and strategies to apply the theory or concept as posited by Carl Rogers. This is an important resource because few theorists effectively can succinctly communicate what leadership and management concepts are and how they are better applied in specific settings. Sullivan, Eleanor and Phillip J. Decker. 2005. Effective Leadership and Nursing Management in Nursing, with Student Video (4th Edition). Authors Sullivan and Decker, wrote a very effective communication piece in the 2005 book Effective Leadership and Nursing Management in Nursing. à Although there is no argument whether leadership is vastly different from management, it carries with it the idea that the practical application of the skills comes in two important aspects and that they are indispensable as well as distinct and inseparable. The authors identified that organizations are designed in their specific arrangements as they function and these are pertinent in how the people working in their specific areas are handled and led. The book is a great resource when specific situations (i.e., staffing and recruiting, coaching and disciplining as well as issues as handling conflict and the workplace stress) that are common in the field of nursing and health care especially where the unique challenges are being faced by both administration and management and frontline staff in this particular field. University of Auckland Business Review. Vol. 7, No.2. According to Dr. Jacques, there is actually no difference between these two terminologies (leadership and management) in the prime values that Dr. Elliot Jacques placed on every part of the organization and as he postulated in his stratified systems theory. When he called for the individual responsibility, he meant that whether the person in the spotlight may be the rank and file individual or he happens to be the plant manager, the type of leadership that is seen is expressive of this core value. Management then implies the adoption of accountability and this summarily implies leadership knowing as mentioned in the preceding pages on influence and exercise of power, when a person exercises accountability, he actually exerts leadership; leading by example and it is fundamentally ethical and transferable. Management and leadership are seen then, as interchangeable essentials, and according to Dr. Jacques, the existence and continuity as well as the perpetuation of a successful team depend much on the kind of leadership exemplified in the theory he posited. The author explains in prà ©cis the need for a more efficient, economical and equitable management of the people in the industry or organization has never been as pronounced as it is today. This need has never been brought about by factors which inevitably affect not only the established structures and ways of doing things within the personnel area but also by the more meaningful and substantial task of managing the organizationââ¬â¢s most important asset ââ¬â the human capital. Among these factors are: stiffer competition in business; rapid changes in technological, competitive and economic environments; the explosion of technical and managerial knowledge; spiraling wage and benefits cost and so many others. These factors have no doubt been responsible for the emergence of the personnel function as a vital area in the implementation of corporate strategy. It accomplishes this by means of adopting a system approach. Explicitly, it infers people-organization affairs in terms of the entire person, group totality, complete organization, and total social structure. The most obvious and renowned, as it is in the title, is the scarlet letter Hester wears upon her breast. Three other significant symbols are the scaffold, the sun, and the forest. The most important and influential symbol in the entire book is the infamous scarlet letter, hence the title, The Scarlet Letter. Hester walks through the prison doors into the world wearing the A, and everyone is in awe that she fabricated it with such intricacy and care. During the first few years of Hesters punishment, the letter was a daily reminder of shame and embarrassment. Hawthorne describes the progression of the A as a ââ¬Å" dreadful agony in feeling a human eye upon the token; the spot never grew callous; it seemed, on the contrary, to grow more sensitive with daily tortureâ⬠(59). As the story unfolds, though, this letter comes to mean other things to Hester and for the people of the town. Rather than bringing torture and remorse to Hester, to some people it transforms into a symbol resembling her ability and strength. They said that it meant able; so strong was Hester Prynne, with a womans strength The scarlet letter had not done its officeâ⬠(111). The scarlet letter was meant as a punishment for Hester, and yet here it is obvious that it hasnt simply punished her. Although the scarlet letter brings some form of humiliation, it has not fulfilled its purpose. ââ¬Å"Thus, we seem to see that, as regarded Hester Prynne, the whole seven years of outlaw and ignominy had been little other than a preparation for this very hourâ⬠(137). When Hester decides to skip town and run away to Europe with Dimmesdale, it becomes obvious that she hasnt learned anything from wearing the letter, because, if she had, she would have known better than to leave town with a man who wasnt her husband. Throughout the book there are various meaning to the scarlet letter. It means different things to different people: a sign of wealth to the butler, curiosity for Pearl, quilt for Dimmesdale, rebelliousness, revenge or motivation for Chillingworth, and betrayal of ones spouse, to name a few. Regardless, the true duty of the letter was to punish and teach a lesson, neither of which the letter performed successfully. The scarlet letter takes on many vital roles and representations that are crucial to the progression of the novel. The scarlet letter is only one of the symbols representing Hesters shame and punishment. Another way it is shown is by the scaffold. Early in the novel, at about the same time Hester is seen wearing the scarlet letter for the first time in public, she stands on the scaffold after walking out of the prison. Hawthorne describes the scaffold as: ââ¬Å"in short, the platform of the pillory; and above it rose the framework of that instrument of discipline, so fashioned as to confine the human head in its tight grasp, and thus hold it up to the public gaze. The very ideal of ignominy was embodied and made manifest in this contrivance of wood and ironâ⬠(39). These few sentences sum up the significance of the scaffold in the novel. There are two other scenes in which the scaffold signifies punishment. The second one is when Dimmesdale exhibits his agony in the veiling of a transgression. In the third scaffold scene, Dimmesdale is humbly repentant, liberating himself of inner and outer torment. All of these scenes signify some sort of pain, release, and shame. The scaffold, like the scarlet letter, to the Puritans, is a place of public mortification for those persons who decide to break the Puritan law. It represents the sin of the person standing upon it and it shows the Puritan way of dealing with and demonstrating sin. Among the other symbols in the book is the sun and its shining. Its importance becomes more evident as the book comes to an end, but the earlier parts of the book are used to build up its significance. Throughout the novel, it is clear that the sun shines on Pearl quite often, but never on Hester. When Hester and Arthur are talking in the forest, after deciding to go to England and live as a family, Hester takes off the scarlet letter to show that she is no longer bound by it. Hawthorne writes that after she had taken off the letter, ââ¬Å"All at once, as with a sudden smile of heaven, forth burst the sunshine, pouring a very flood into the obscure forest, gladdening each green leaf, transmuting the yellow fallen ones to gold, and gleaming down the gray trunks of the solemn trees. The objects that had made a shadow hitherto, embodied the brightness nowâ⬠(139). This can be interpreted to mean that nature is happy with Hester and Arthur. According to Natural Law, Hester and Arthur arent guilty, since they are no longer oppressed. Because God has control over nature, this shows that He is happy with them. Sunshine is meant to signify natures and, consequently, Gods happiness and standing with Arthur and Hester. The last of the four major symbols in the book is the forest. Hawthorne writes: ââ¬Å"Art thou like the Black Man that haunts the forest round about us? By saying this, Hester is continuing the belief of the Puritans in the story, who see the forest as dark or evil, as the place where the witches go at night to have meetings, and a home of the devil. A possible interpretation of why the Puritans made up these things about the forest could be that they were trying to keep the people from the Natural Law; they wanted people to be subject to the Purita n Law. This is what Hawthorne is trying to portray, but, as with the last symbol and the common interpretation of it, he errs in his point. Hawthorne tries to make the Puritans look bad; he says, ââ¬Å"Their immediate posterity, the generation next to the early emigrants, wore the blackest shade of Puritanism, and so darkened the national visage with it, that all the subsequent years have not sufficed to clear it upâ⬠(159). The common interpretation Hawthorne tries to get across implies that Natural Law is equal to Gods Law, and that the Puritans have all their beliefs mixed up and theyre wrong. This is where Hawthorne errs. In reality, Puritan Law is closer to Gods law than is Natural Law, as it is seen in the book. The Puritans based their law on Gods Law, but the Natural Law portrayed in the book isnt based on Gods Law. Hawthorne uses several symbols to portray themes and ideas in this novel. Each of these has common interpretations that resemble very crucial parts of the story. Hawthorne shows things vicariously through other things. The symbols in this novel are very pivotal in understanding and interpreting the story and in the progression of the story and characters. In the Ibo community, polygamy is an accepted practice. Okonkwo is a prime example of the typical male in the tribe. He has three wives total and many children. In the Ibo community, the more wives a man has the more masculine he is considered. The people of the community worship their ancestors very often. 2. Why did ââ¬Å"things fall apart? â⬠Things fell apart in the Ibo community because of the outside influences coming into their village and changing their culture. The Ibo had a lack of communication with the Christian missionaries. The religions of the two sides differed vastly and they could not truly agree on God or how to worship. The Ibo could not understand the Holy Trinity and they were being told that the statues of their gods that they believed were made by their one supreme god were fake gods. To prevent the community from falling apart, the missionaries could have accepted that the Ibo would not want to change their religion and left the community alone. 3. Was Mr. Brown (the initial missionary) ethnocentric? Why or why not? Mr. Brown was extremely ethnocentric. When he arrived to Umuofia he immediately told the people of the Ibo community that they were worshipping false gods and they must accept Christianity. He says that the gods of the village are incapable of causing any harm to him for the way he speaks about them. He accepted everyone into the church, even those who were outcasts of the community and did not pay attention to the rules of the villagers. 4. I think the most important message in this novel is that some things and some people just arenââ¬â¢t meant to change. There are some people that are so set in their ways that when others intervene, it causes extreme problems. When the messenger at the meeting near the end of the novel says that the meeting is over, Okonkwo kills him immediately because he is so frustrated with the way his people have handled the missionaries since they arrived. Professor Ramos BlogIf You Cant Stand The Heat, Get Out of The Kitchen! Culinary school was always my dream growing up.à I achieved that goal right after high school.à I attended La Cuisine of Culinary Arts in Laguna Beach and graduated with the highest distinction.à Because of that, I got job offers at restaurants and hotels all over Orange County.à I decided to venture out to Rancho Mirage and try out Royââ¬â¢s Hawaiian Fusion; a high-end restaurant ran by a celebrity chef.à Walking in on my first day, I did not know what to expect since I have never worked in a big kitchen before.à I was greeted with, ââ¬Å"Hey baby girl, looking good,â⬠followed by about six whistling grown men smirking at me as I walked to my station.à It was then that I had realized I had entered a manââ¬â¢s world with no training, no classes, or pamphlets on how to survive as a female chef in a male dominated profession. à à à à à à à à à à à Traditionally, in the restaurant world, the front of the house is mainly females and the back of the house is mostly males.à Going into the cooking world, I did not really know that this was the norm of cooking, but it was.à I was raised by my dad, so for lack of better words, I was a Tom Boy.à He always taught me to be strong and have thick skin.à ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t be a sissy,â⬠I felt was his catch phrase throughout my childhood.à So that is what I repeated to myself over and over as I walked with my head high, ââ¬Å"Be strong. Have tough skin. Donââ¬â¢t be a sissy.â⬠à Who did these guys think they were anyways?à I got hired to do the same job as they did, but they obviously thought I did not have what it took to hang in the kitchen.à My first night of dinner service, the head chef wanted to see what I could handle, so he put me on the expo station. On the expo station, you are the leader of the kitchen. Expo makes sure that all food orders come out of the kitchen correctly and in a timely manner, basically the orchestra conductor. At first, I could tell the guys wanted to try and prove something to me and put me in my place. I got this drift because at first they were all slamming me with plates all at once in no particular order; they were trying to sabotage me. A huge wave of frustration engulfed me as I was losing my place and messing up the whole dinner service. They had succeeded. The guys proved that I could not hang in the kitchen with ââ¬Å"the big boys.â⬠I was crying on the inside, and I could not gather myself. It was at that moment of all hopelessness that I got my second wind of hope. I knew I was much better than what was being displayed. I was not going to let anyone ruin my image because I knew how good of a chef I truly was. After my first rush of tickets that went terribly south, another rush came shortly after. I took a five minute break and went back into the kitchen. I still had the smirks and whistles coming my way. When the next round of tickets came in I blocked everyone out and took a deep breath. And then it happened, I found my groove. I started calling out tickets, grabbing plates, garnishing dishes, and getting the kitchen to flow efficiently. At one point, I was going so fast the guys were asking me to repeat myself and slow down a bit, which is a cardinal sin in kitchen etiquette. At the end of service, the head chef came to me and told me that I did a great job in expediting the kitchen and getting all orders out without a struggle. I was feeling on top of the world to say the least. I had proven to myself, the chef, and my peers that I was good enough. I knew the guys were shocked by my progress by the end of the night. You would think that they all congratulated me with open arms to have survived that hazing period, but this is no Romantic Comedy film. The guys only continued to jab sexualized jokes towards me that were both inappropriate and annoying. I had just proven myself to be as good or better than most of those guys in the kitchen. ââ¬Å"You can get it whenever you want baby girl,â⬠was the comment that over flowed my boiling point. I literally could not believe what I had just heard. My heart immediately dropped to my stomach and then I instantly thought of my dad-what he always told me about being strong. I think over the years I have always misinterpreted his choice words. To me those words meant to keep your head down and get things done. When in all actuality, I think what he was meaning to convey was to be strong because life is going to throw you curveballs that sometimes you may not know how to handle at that moment, but it is okay to address things you feel strongly about. I then continued to politely, but sternly ask everyone making crude comments towards me to respect that I am a female and I was not there for nonsense with the guys. I loved food, and we had the same goal of creating delicious dishes to share with people who came to eat our food. Realizing that kitchen banter is quite vulgar was a huge shock, but every kitchen I ventured to was the same. Everyone is interested in the new girl coming in and wants to see if anyone can break her. It is a game to most guys in the industry. I had to be firm in where I stood with everyone I worked with and let them know I will respect them if they return the respect. If not, I would be not very pleasant. Throughout the years, most coworkers did not bat an eye to my requests but a select few tried to test me. It did not end well for them when I would have no choice but to call them out for being very unprofessional with me, and they looked like jerks to everyone. I really had to find my voice in a kitchen full of men. Being a chef is not glamorous like television shows portray. It is filled with hot long hours in small quarters with the same group of people day in and day out. Working in those conditions on top of all the kitchen talk can be exhausting at times, but all within reason. I had to stand up for what I thought was appropriate and what was not appropriate because I wanted my beliefs to be respected by others around me. The second initiative that the Axis partners wanted to achieve was to neutralize or destroy Soviet Communism.2 For instance, on 1 November 1936, Italy and Germany reflected on their common goal, which aimed at destabilizing the order, which was already established in Europe. During this time, they formed the Rome-Berlin Axis, which served as an indicator of friendship between the two countries. After a month, Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany entered into an agreement titled Anti-Comintern Pact. This agreement was directed towards destabilizing the Soviet Union. On 6 November 1937, Italy joined efforts with the Anti-Comintern Pact to strengthen the initiatives of these countries further. Italy and Germany formed the Pact of Steel on 22 May 1939. This agreement led to the formalization of the Axis alliance, including various military provisions followed by these countries. On 27 September 1940, Japan, Italy, and Germany entered into the Tripartite Pact agreement, which led to the formation of the Axis alliance. These Axis powers contribute to various catastrophic errors as the Second World War was going on.3 These issues made the war to take longer than anticipated, based on the coordinated strategies these countries had implemented. This paper discusses the reasons why the Axis was defeated during the Second World War, considering the powers that the countries involved possessed in their respective regions territories. Various events led to the defeat of the Axis alliance and delays during World War 2. The invasion of Greece by Italy is one of the key contributing factors towards the defeat of the Axis alliance. Under the leadership of Mussolini, Italy decided to invade Greece without Germanyââ¬â¢s knowledge. What are the different political consequences of one party system, two-party system and multi-party system? In modern societies, political parties seem to be an indispensable part in almost every country. A political party is a group of people organized to seek influence in government policy and for the purpose of winning government power, by nominating their candidates in electoral and other means. In a democratic society, a political party is on the input side of a political system, that is, the demands and interests of the people are collected from political parties and analyzed by the government before any policy decision is made. E.E. Schattschneider (1942), a political scientist, did a comprehensive research over party politics, concluded that political parties created democracy, and modern democracy is unthinkable save except in terms of parties. To a certain extent, it is impossible to run a democratic government without the help of political parties as they have quite a lot of important functions to the government. The main function of political parties is to ensure a two-way communication system between the government and public. Public opinion has long been of vital importance to democratic governance. And political parties, under this circumstance, act as a bridge between government and public. Public opinions would be collected by political parties. Different viewpoints from the public would be delivered to the government after the integration of opinion and moderation of differences by political parties. As a result, different people can be brought together so that they can compromise and reach a consensus for policy making, which in turn create a more democratic and harmonious society. Another function of political parties is to bring aggregation of people of different interests. Apart from political parties, it is not uncommon to find interest groups in the society, which simply want to promote their groups interest and inform the public of it. However, chaotic and unstable government would be resulted if interest groups became the highest form of political organization. As interest groups would mainly focus on their needs and have conflicts with each other easily, it is difficult to set comprehensive goals or values in policy making. Political parties, in this situation, help pulling interest groups into a larger organization. In doing so, interest group conflicts can be calmed and settled by interest aggregation. Therefore, many large political parties nowadays, such as the Democratic Party in the United States and the Labour Party in Britain, are coalitions of different interest groups. Integration of different new groups into political system can also be done by political parties, especially for integrative parties, which attempt to mobilize, inspire and educate the public instead of only responding to public concerns. Political parties usually welcome new groups join in and provide them support by giving them educational opportunities, welfare benefits and so on. In doing so, members of the group may feel represented, thus develop a sense of belonging and loyalty to the political system. The U.K. Labour Party and German Social Democratic Party would be related examples. Labours in the above parties are integrated successfully into the political system and learnt to strive for their needs by democratic rules. On the contrary to countries where integration of working class into the political system was failed, radical movements might easily be resulted. After integration into political system, political socialization is essential for transferring knowledge of the political system and social concern to the people. Political parties provide political values and factual assumptions in politics. For instance, they teach their members to organize meetings, speak in public and influence government policies. Through these teachings and trainings, the public can form positive attitudes, values and beliefs which sustain the political system As a result, members can be politically conscious and get more involved in politics. Political parties can also be the training grounds for leaders through political socialization. As a result, citizens can be represented by the educated officials and democracy can be achieved by bringing public opinion in the government. Apart from the aforementioned, political parties act as a monitoring tool to the government. As party members can be part of the government after winning elections, they can oversee the government by participation. And they can bring peoples voice in and suggest alternate policies and choices to the government, then hold the government to be accountable and responsive. Once the government has done something wrong that would harm the citizens, political parties can immediately voice out the opposition. Under this situation, it would be relatively harder for the government to ignore public voices and thus achieve a more democratic society. From the above mentioned, political parties serve a number of vital functions to create a democratic society. Political Parties, as a communication channel, facilitate the interactions and understanding between the government and the citizens. Peoples demands can be effectively transmitted to the government. To achieve real democracy, other aspects, such as honest and well-informed press and a stable party system, are other important factors as well. Nevertheless, political parties are the most direct way to influence government policy-making. Without political parties, the government may be loosely organized and peoples opinions would hardly be reflected. Therefore, political parties are necessary for the advancement of democracy. Political parties operate within party systems, and the type of system will have profound effects on party behavior. Party systems are the interactions of different political parties. There are three types of party systems briefly, which are one-party system, two-party system and multi-party system. By definition, one-party system has only one party dominates the political system. According to Almond, one-party system can be divided into three types. The first type would be authoritarian party system. Under authoritarian party system, there is only one party controlling the interest aggregation and articulation. There is no other competition for political powers, and opposition is suppressed and disallowed. Another type is totalitarian party system. Under this system, only one party has the legitimate right to govern. No competition for political powers is allowed. Party uses indoctrination, highly emphasizes people interest and party interest should be equal. The system uses the official ideology to mobilize the mass so as to gain political support. For instance, China was under this party system and used mass campaign, such as the Cultural Revolution to mobilize people. In modern society, it is believed that North Korea is one of the remaining countries that is still under this totalitarian party system. The last type is dominate non-authoritarian party system. This system exists with only one strong party. Even though other parties are permitted to exist in the country, they are not strong enough to challenge or compete with the dominant political party for power. As a result, practically, there is only one party in power. Take the example of the Peoples Republic of China (PRC), a system called multi-party cooperation under the Chinese Communist Partys leadership has been developed. That is, there are at present eight so-called democratic parties in China apart from the Communist Party. However, these eight other political parties, such as China Democratic League, China Association for Promoting Democracy and Jiu San Society in the PRC are only under the leadership of the Communist Party. At the end, the only party that matters and gains the power is the Communist Party. No matter which type of the one-party system does the country follow, various political consequences might likely be resulted. Decision making under one-party system is efficient. As there is only one party in power, other viewpoints need not to be concerned much. Without public consultation and discussion process, swift changes or decisions are likely to be made. Take China as an example, the Communist Party holds all political power and has the exclusive right to legitimize and control all other political organizations. As a result, the Communist Party, alone, determines all the social, economic and political policies and goals for society efficiently without too much hesitation. Nonetheless, corruption would be possible as there is no checks and balances in the country. No out party is there to supervise in party. Even there are other parties in the state, they are too weak or ineffective to challenge the political power. And as there is only one party who gains the political power and controls the government, politicians would have a low risk to be prosecuted, punished, or to lose their seat. As a result, it may be relatively easier for them to take bribes. In the long run, corruption under one-party system can undermine public trust towards the whole political system and government and threaten the viability of democracy. Moreover, political apathy may be caused due to only one party in power. No matter how people express their point of views to the government, the political party may only focus on its narrow point of view, not accepting others. In some countries, such as China, would even have censorship to control peoples freedom of speech, preventing them from expressing opinions harm the partys governance. As time passes, people may feel themselves as incapable and powerless in politics, led to the cause of political apathy. Apart from the one-party system, two-party system is adopted by some countries nowadays as well. It is a competitive system with two major political parties dominating the system and competing for power. Other political parties are allowed to exist under the two-party system, but they are not strong enough to challenge the two large ad well-supported parties under most situations. Usually, the two dominant parties hold equal power, having an equal chance to win the general election depending on their previous performance. The United States of America is one of the countries adopting the two-party system, which the Republican and Democrats are the major two parties in the country. With two strong parties in the system act as opposition party, the governance may be relatively stable. There would be checks and balances between parties and the government. Unlike the situation in one-party system, the political ideas would be relatively diverse as the two parties do not incline to only one and narrow standpoint. And the two parties may ensure the government is responsive and responsible towards peoples need and concern. Although the opposition from the two parties ensures the government is responsive and responsible, several political drawbacks may be resulted. The political views from the two parties might vary a lot. Take the two-party system in the U.S. as an example, within each party, there are moderate republicans or democrats and extreme republican or democrats. For moderate republicans or democrats, sometimes they may express ideas based on their views but not following the party lines. For extreme republican or democrats, as they need to distinguish themselves from the other, their political views may become more and more extreme and two-sided, and lead to the rivalry of partisan politicsmay lead to rivalry of two parties like partisan parties may lead to rivalry of two parties like partisan parties. The great variance on political viewpoints within a party may cause confusion to the citizens. And if the views are too extreme or mostly only divided into two standpoints, it may be hard and t ime-consuming to have consensus between two parties on certain policy and peoples choice on policy making may possibly be limited. In addition, it may discourage independent or third-party candidates due to low winning chances in elections. For example, in the U.S., people have tried to set up others parties, such as the Green Party. Ralph Nader, a person who was not from the two major parties, was one of the president candidate in 2004 election. However, candidates like him simply have no chance of winning in the election, so it is hard for them to survive. Under this circumstance, in long term, new political ideas and opportunities of participation may be limited, as the major parties may be too stuck in their ways, affecting policy-making quality. The last type, the multi-party system, consists of two or more major political parties with equal strength, but none of which can win majority votes and the general election. A coalition government can be resulted, which composed of the two or three parties that win the largest number of votes or seats in the legislature. The existence of a multi-party system reflects efficient aggregation and expression of minority interest within the society. Parties concerning minorities may also get the chance in winning elections and thus the related viewpoints can be brought in various policy discussions. Under this system, a willingness to compromise and cooperate may be shown. However, this system is often criticized to be unstable. As there are many different political parties holding different political platform, values are extremely diverse, they may not be able to keep government in power for long. Germany Parliamentary election, with parties having extreme diverse values, in September 2005 showed as an example of unstable multi-party system. Besides, Italy and Israel, with multi-party system, has had years of diverse politics. And the coalition government under the system is inherently unstable, since when a party withdraws from the coalition due to internal conflicts, the government will no longer enjoy majority support from the legislature. Instability, to both the government and citizens, is non-beneficial. In long-run, citizens may lose confidence in governance. To conclude, each political system has its own political consequences, with merits or demerits. In modern democratic society, checks and balances are of certain importance in the government and any political system. Therefore, one-party system may not be preferable for a countrys governance. For two-party system and multi-party system, it is hard to conclude which is better, and there has been even a middle ground version of these two systems- two-plus party systems. But anyway, as long as parties can effectively use their power and represent public opinion, a stable and moderate party system can be established. And this, in long run, can make democracy possible.
